One of today's top trends in Home Decor is the use of natural fibres in just about any space. There's definitely something to be said for the contrast of a traditional piece of furniture again the rough texture of wicker sisal or seagrass. Simply beautiful!

Interior Decorator Sometimes following the rules can be pretty boring...especially when it comes to Interior Design! However, when we're talking about practicality and function there are a few rules that should always be followed, measurement rules to be exact. Here are a few of those important rules!
Now, when it comes to choosing the perfect rug for your Dining Room- the rug that will pull it all together- always remember to choose something that measures at least 24-30" wider and longer than your table. That way when you pull out your chair it won't catch on the edge of the rug. Also, it will give the room a very visually appealing and grounded look!
Now, here's a classic style that still remains relevant and fashionable. Whether you choose to go with a Tufted Sofa, Chair, Ottoman, Headboard, Bench or even WALL... this trend can work for you! Decor-Rest 2230 Sofa

Interior Decorator Few things say Christmas quite like getting comfy cozy, sipping apple cider with family and friends, and cuddling up by a crackling fire. But wait...is your fireplace ready to be in the centre of attention? This month I'd like to talk a bit about the best ways to add a bit of style to your fireplace during the Holiday season and all year round. The very first thing to consider is The Centrepiece What will be the focus of your mantle arrangement? Do you have a certain piece of art, a mirror or a wreath that you would like to feature? Just be sure to keep both the scale and the style of the fireplace in mind when choosing your centrepiece. Now, that doesn't necessarily mean it has to match perfectly, sometimes an unexpected contrast can be a good thing! A tip that I always try to follow is the be sure that the art/mirror isn't wider than the mantle. Leaving a few inches of space on either side can actually make the next step much easier!
Enjoy those cozy moments. Happy Holidays!

Interior Decorator Something as simple as furniture arrangement can totally effect the functionality and mood of a family. In order to get the best possible results, creativity is key! If you'd like to cut down on the physically demanding aspect of arranging your furniture...try going old school and using graph paper and the 1square = 1foot method. Measure your furniture and cut out pieces of paper in the appropriate size. This way you can create a look that is special and unique without all the struggle and strain of moving heavy furniture. Here are a few of my favourite tips that you can use when your choosing the perfect position for all of your furniture. 1. Try arranging everything diagonally in the space. No, this isn't going to work perfectly in each & every room but it might be a possible solution if you're looking for something with a lot of visual interest.

Interior Decorator Appliances are designed to make your life easy. Especially when cared for properly. We've asked our experts to share their favorite appliance hacks to keep them clean, working well and to keep your life simple. RefrigeratorMany people have heard of the baking soda method of keeping your fridge smelling fresh and clean, but have you heard of the kitty litter method? Granted, it sounds a little strange but it can work wonders. Put a small amount of kitty litter into a cup at the back of your fridge, it will absorb all those unwanted scents and you will smell the difference. Car wax is about to become your new best friend. Say goodbye to fingerprints and scratches on your stainless steel refrigerator. Use a soft cloth to rub in the car wax and then buff buff buff until the surface is clean of residue. Voila! OvenSelf cleaning ovens are a wonder. If you've even tried to clean a dirty oven you will really appreciate this function. A trick to ensure the best results is to remove crumbs first. Washer & DryerTo keep your washer tub as clean as can be, here's what you should do: Every 4-6 months run the machine through a cycle without any items in it. Just pour in a small amount of bleach and let the machine do the work. In the case of a front load washer, leave the door slightly ajar when not in use. This will let the tub air out and help with the stinky smell that can happen when residual water gets stuck in the lip of the door. To optimize the performance of your front load washer, always remember to periodically clean out the filter. Here's how it's done. MicrowaveWe all know microwaves can get dirty pretty quickly. When it happens, don't fret, put a mixture of lemon, vinegar and water into a microwave safe dish and set the timer for 3-4 minutes. When the time is up the microwave will be all steamy and fresh smelling, just wipe down the inside and you're all set! After deciding to purchase a new piece of furniture, you need to decide whether or not to purchase a warranty to go along with it. Sometimes it can be worrying, How much does it cost? What does it cover? Who does the service? These are common questions that most people ask themselves when they're trying to make this decision. We're here to help answer these questions for you. How much does it cost? The first, and most common question that customers ask when it comes to purchasing a warranty is of course "How much?" The answer is not always the same. Our warranties depend on the price of the purchased items. Lets say you've chosen a sofa that costs $799, the All Stain Warranty would be $99.99. If your sofa cost you $1100, the same warranty would be $119.99. So, technically the more you spend on your furniture, the more the warranty will cost as well. The reason for this is simply because the replacement cost is more. No matter what you spend on your furniture or appliance, it's wise to invest in a warranty to protect your initial investment. What does it cover?
What about the Service? We have authorized local service professionals in each category of warranty to help you with any issues you may have. They will review your complaint with you and schedule a time to go take a look at the problem. Then, they will work to come up with the best possible solution, whether it be repairing the item or a full replacement. Whether you've recently purchased a new home, finished a new construction or even if you've been in the same home for years, you should consider the importance of quality window coverings. There are numerous reasons to consider installing blinds. Privacy, Light Control and aesthetics are only the beginning. Have you ever considered U.V protection and Energy Efficiency? We're here to explain on these benefits and make choosing a blind as simple as can be! The most crucial first step would be to choose a style of blind or shade. This has to be something that will be both practical and aesthetically pleasing. Many designers can actually go to your home with different samples to help you better understand what will work in your space. Some of the most popular types include: Honeycomb, Horizontal, Window Shadings, Roller Shades, Vertical, and Shutters Horizontal With great light control options Horizontal blinds are one of the most popular styles. The vanes are available in differnt materials, as well as colours and finishes. Vinyl, Wood and Metal options are available so that the blinds will work well with any style. Higher end wood options are even warp and mildew resistant, to ensure that your new blinds will last! Horizontal blind stats come in different sizes. 1/2"-1" slats will work best on a small to medium sized window, while 2" or larger slats are best on a larger window or for a more dramatic look. TypesHoneycomb Available in Single, Double or Triple layers - Honeycomb Shades are great thermal insulators, they will help you control the temperature in your home. They are flexible and will work well in most windows, ranging from small to large and with plenty of colour options, honeycomb blinds will complement just about any style as well. You could choose something that will blend into the surroundings or choose a bold colour that will pop for more of a statement. Different levels of opacity are also an option. To completely block light to allow for lazy weekends or optimal UV protection Opaque options are available. For a subtle glow opt for a medium level of opacity.
Vertical Most commonly used over sliding glass doors, vertical blinds can not only add a lot of visual interest and light control to large open spaces, they can also create a bold clean look and enhance the visual height of your space.
Child Safety
Privacy & SecurityWhen you can easily see outside through your windows, others can easily see you as well. This is especially true at night when your lights are on inside. This is a major reason people purchase blinds. Privacy is very important not only for personal reasons but also for security reasons as well. Blinds will ensure yours and your loved ones privacy in your home, where comfort and security really count. Temperature Control & Energy SavingsDuring the daytime the sun is continuous shining through your windows. This is a great thing when you're home, awake, and able to appreciate it and the temperature remains the way you like. Blinds are a great way to prevent the sun from shining in and warming up your space when your not home to control the temperate levels. This prevention will reduce the demand placed on your air conditioner. U.V damage to furniture and accessories is also reduced or eliminated with the use of blinds. Using a DecoratorIt's easy to become overwhelmed with the styles and colour options that are available when choosing blinds for your home. A Decorator can make the process much easier for you. Sample books are available so you can see and feel different fabrics or materials. They will take the proper measurements and even set up the installation. Decorators understand that choosing to install blinds in your home is an important decision and an investment that you will surely not regret!
Lauren Hare & Kelly Wellwood Interior Decorators When it's time to purchase a new appliance the attached price tag is only one consideration. Over the lifetime of an appliance there is an additional cost that is rarely considered. Energy Efficient appliances lower that cost, which otherwise can be a real burden overtime. Not to mention the excellent savings programs that are available and the Environmental impact- Energy Efficient Products are the right choice! Have you been waking up in the morning with aches and pains? Have you been feeling restless and tired? Have you been tossing and turning and unable to drift off into a deep sleep? These are all signs that it may be time for a new mattress. Choosing your new mattress can seem like a daunting task. There are so many different mattress types and without knowing the pros and cons of each type it can be a really difficult choice. We're here to help!
|
Innerspring / Pocket Coil | This is the most widely used mattress type. The mattress can either be made up of a metal frame with coils lined up throughout the entire inner-area of the mattress. This is an older model of mattress. Now, most Innerspring mattresses can also be called "Pocket Coil" The coils of this type are individually enclosed which prevents the springs from popping out and also provides a more contouring surface that will hug your body. In both types the springs are within layers of comfortable material, usually foam or latex. These materials can range from firm to plush. They can even feature a Pillow-Top for added comfort! Prices can range for any budget but it's best to avoid the lower end models. They won't offer the same level of comfort and support. |
Memory Foam | Layers of different foam density make up a Memory Foam Mattress. These layer respond to body temperature and weight and they contour your unique body shape. Memory Foam Mattresses are great for people who have a hard time getting comfortable in the night. They reduce pressure points, relieve pain and absorb movement. There are a few setbacks however. Some people find they absorb heat and can become really warm at night. Simmons has a mattress with an Air Cool Gel to prevent that. Also, sometimes Memory Foam Mattresses will omit a slight chemical smell. |
Adjustable | Only certain types of mattresses can be used with an adjustable bed. That's because in order to adjust, the mattress must be flexible and able to bend into the desired shape. Latex, Memory Foam or even Air Mattresses can be used. Adjustable Beds are a wonderful option for people with sleep apnea. They provide the flexibility they need. People with acid reflux should also consider them, as well as elderly people who have difficulty getting in and out of their beds. |
The most crucial step in choosing a mattress is to test it out! Make yourself comfortable and lay in the bed for at least 15 minutes. It's impossible to judge whether or not you like the mattress otherwise. It's even a good idea to bring your pillow along with you when you're mattress shopping. Trust us, you wouldn't be the first!

So...you're stuck with a small space that's just not working for you. Although it may not be possible to actually change the size of your room, there are plenty of simple tricks that can be used to make that space feel oh so much bigger!
Lighting
To visually open-up a room and add a light and airy feel, let the sun shine in. Natural Light can work wonders on a small space unlike anything else. Use sheer or lightly coloured curtains to expose your window as much as you can. The room will feel more open and sight lines will be lengthened past the surrounding walls and out into the view.To add privacy to the room purchase lightly coloured blinds that can both provide privacy when needed and can also let in the natural light during the day.
Curtains: Softlines Home Fashions Blinds: Hunter Douglas Mirror: Renwil
If windows are limited in your space, try hanging a mirror to reflect your natural light and brighten up any dark corners of the room. This is one of the cheapest and easiest ways to transform your space.
Colours
When Choosing the wall colour in your small space it's a good idea to keep the words "Light" and "Cool" in mind. These types of colours work wonderfully in small spaces to reflect light and visually expand the room. Warm & Dark colours can have the opposite effect, creating an even cozier area which is not what we want at all. They also absorb more light than desired.
For a streamlined look, try using monochromatic colouring on walls and even some of the furniture pieces or larger accessories. This will keep the eye moving along a line with fewer breaks.

Furniture
The furniture choices you make are definitely the most important aspect of the design in a small space. The number one tip I can give for choosing furniture in your small space is this: Multipurpose. Instead of cluttering up your room with items that serve only one singular purpose, opt for things that are versatile. Storage pieces are particularly important in most homes, so instead of using a simple coffee table for instance, an ottoman might be a better option. This will provide the functionality of a coffee table as well as additional seating and storage.
Bench:Korson TV Stand:Korson Blue Ottoman:Korson White Ottoman:Korson Boxes:ImportsCanada
Apart from multipurpose furnishings, you can also try choosing furniture that features exposed legs. These choices will only help to create the larger look your aiming for.
A common mistake when choosing furniture for a small space is to go with multiple small pieces instead of one larger piece. I can see why this mistake is made, I mean...small room, small scale, makes sense right? Wrong. By adding too many small pieces, the room will read as "cluttered". Instead go for one large-scale statement piece that will fill up the room without giving a confused or cluttered look.

Furniture Placement Tips
1. Pull furniture away from the walls
Create space by leaving a gap between the back of upholstered furniture
pieces and the wall. You could even add a sofa back table in the unused
area as a great place to sit lamps or accessories.
2. Angles are your friend
The longest line of your room is the diagonal line from corner to corner.
Work with that natural line by placing some of your furniture pieces on an angle.
Accessories
Acrylic or glass accessories work in small spaces in the same way as furniture with exposed legs. They have less visual weight and therefore work well to make the space appear open and airy.

When it comes to art, go big and go bold. This way the eye will only have to focus on one object which is a good thing in a small space!

Start from Scratch | The first step on your path to an expertly styled home is to start from scratch! |
Take all of your accessories out. Put them in a separate room and make sure the space is empty apart from larger furniture pieces. Now, we all know nothing can freshen-up a space quite like a good cleaning so take this opportunity to clean clean clean!
| TIP: Dust each accessory with a damp cloth as it is removed from the space; this will ensure the room is as fresh and clean as possible!

Something Special
Keep it Together
Once you've chosen the most special & important pieces. Take a look and see if some or all of them belong to a "collection" for example a collection of family photos or travel souvenirs.
These items should be displayed together to create a focus. In the case of family photos a gallery wall may be a good option. Travel Souvenirs could be displayed on a shelf or series of shelves
Do not place pieces of a collection haphazardly throughout a space. This will create visual confusion and end up looking unplanned and messy.
| TIP: When displaying travel
mementos use photos from your journey to act as a backdrop to some of the smaller pieces in the collection

Size & Scale
When grouping decorative items a trick I like to use is to place one tall item, one medium height item and a short item together. This will give a very visually pleasing look and will make each item stand out while also working as a whole.
A great tip to follow is to remember that smaller items will always feel unimportant when sitting either on a large surface or in front of a large piece of art.
| TIP: Try stacking a few books under a small accessory to add importance and height

Texture
To add visual interest & contrast just mix different textures.
The photo to the right shows how three decor items of similar styling can make a huge statement when different textures are used. Mixing metal, wood and ceramic creates a really unique and interesting display. If each of the three pieces were metal, the effect would be much different.
Something to keep in mind is to try and match the "style" of the items you are displaying together. Modern, Global, Traditional, Artisan etc. We don't want the items to vary in all ways. If you are focusing on mixing textures and materials, try not to mix styles as well.

Fresh & Fun
Freshen up just about any room with fresh flowers, a small house plant or even fresh fruit displayed in a bowl or cylindrical vase.
Final touches like these are what can really complete a look and add an extra touch of personality and life to your home.
Balance
I may be a little biased on this topic because there's little a like more than perfect symmetry but truly you can't go wrong with creating a balance in your space. It's something that should always be considered when placing decor, accessories, and even furniture in your home.
In the photo to the left we can see two kinds of balance. The artwork hanging on the wall represents symmetry. They are proportional to each other and can be lined up along the axis. This is not the only way to create a harmonious and balanced look. In the photo we see that the purple cushion is off center and could look very out of place, however the throw blanket at the foot of the bed on the right hand side counteracts the cushion and creates balance. Tricks like this should be used for a more relaxed feel, when perfect symmetry can sometimes feel a little cold and formal.

2015 brings with it the newest and hottest colour trends in Home Décor. We scoured the internet and Decor Magazines and divided the result up into 3 major categories.
1. Rich Worldly Blues
The Greeks took inspiration from the sea and used it on the roofs of the crisp white buildings of Oia. In China during the first millennia, the colour was very commonly used in glazed porcelain.
One of the most beautiful and inspirational places I visited on my travels was Delft, The Netherlands. This is where Blue Delftware was created beginning in the 16th century.
Now in the year 2015 we are seeing a rise in popularity of these deep rich blues and crisp white not only in pottery but also in upholstery and paint. Making it one of the most popular colours this year!
2. Palest Pastels
Think of the soft tones of blue, pink and yellow we see in the sky during sunset. Think of the silvery green of pale jade. For Instance Guilford Green, the Colour of the Year according to Benjamin Moore
Pastel colours don't necessarily have to scream "Easter". They can be a subtle alternative to a neutral adding freshness and life to any space.
Pastels are here to stay!
3. Earthy Wines & Blush
According the Pantone (the leading authority on colour), the colour of the year is Marsala. The name comes from a Italian town located in Sicily & known around the world for its unique tasting wine. We are seeing evidence of its rise in popularity particularly in Home Decor mostly because of the colour's warmth and richness, making it a wonderful option for cushions, throws, rugs or any accent piece. Not only is the purest wine colour becoming popular, we are also seeing pops of blush accessories and other varying tints. This earthy red-brown tone is truly an up & coming colour.
